Guardians of the Gobi railways
May 5, 2025
As trains thunder across the tracks like streaks of lightning, few pause to think of the silent sentinels safeguarding Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's 9,525.68 kilometres of railway — much of it cutting through the barren Gobi Desert. The smart farm built last May in Kuqa of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region with funding from Ningbo, Zhejiang province of East China, uses hydroponics and automated climate control to grow leafy greens and strawberries unaffected by the dry, dusty surroundings of the Taklimakan Desert, the world's second-largest shifting sand desert.

The planting season for growing cotton in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, China's primary cotton-producing hub, is expected to conclude this week. Farmers say they are undeterred by Western sanctions imposed over alleged "forced labor" practices, insisting that Xinjiang's high-quality cotton is irreplaceable in the global market and remains a reliable source of income.
